Pentair's Aquatic Systems Facility Receives International Recognition for Excellence

September 10, 2013

Summary: After trained examiners and accomplished business professionals performed a thorough assessment of its Aquatic System facility, Pentair in Moorpark, Calif., has been selected as a recipient of an internationally recognized award from The Shingo Prize for Operational Excellence, part of the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business.

MOORPARK, Calif. - The Shingo Prize for Operational Excellence, part of the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University, has selected Pentair's Aquatic Systems facility as a recipient of the Shingo Silver Medallion.

"Receipt of the Shingo Silver Medallion signifies an organization's strong use of tools, techniques and mature systems for business improvement," said Robert Miller, executive director at The Shingo Prize. "They are organizations that are beginning to align their internal behavior with the principles we teach and are well on their way to achieving true operational excellence."

The Shingo Silver Medallion is the second of three awards bestowed on organizations by The Shingo Prize for Operational Excellence, the highest achievement being The Shingo Prize.

Pentair's Aquatic Systems business is a global leader in swimming pool, spa and aquatic equipment. Within Pentair, the Moorpark site is responsible for the manufacturing of heaters, filters, pumps, lights and automation systems that comply with Pentair's mission of providing high-performance, reliable and energy-efficient products.

Pentair's Aquatic Systems at Moorpark began an organization-wide improvement initiative in 2003 that it calls a "lean journey," referring to the concept of continuously improving operations procedures and methodically eliminating activities that do not ultimately provide value to the customer. In addition to the Shingo Silver Medallion, Aquatic Systems at Moorpark has received Pentair's Chairman's award for its 2009 and 2010 business results and Pentair's Manufacturing Excellence Award for exceeding safety, quality, delivery and cost goals across the organization.

"I am very proud of what the Moorpark team has accomplished," said Mike Schrock, president and chief operating officer, Pentair. "It is a testament to the hard work and engagement of everyone at the facility."

By "challenging" or applying for a Shingo award, organizations invite a group of accomplished professionals and trained examiners from The Shingo Prize to thoroughly review their culture and operations. The examiners select the organizations they think are worthy of recognition.

"In providing recognition, The Shingo Prize invites organizations to challenge early in their implementation of improvement efforts," Miller said. "Doing so provides them valuable feedback to help accelerate their implementation. By understanding the principles we teach, organizations can begin to proactively change their culture. Culture is the key to sustainable excellence."

Pentair's Aquatic Systems facility at Moorpark, Calif., will receive the Shingo Silver Medallion at the Awards Ceremony and Gala during the 26th Annual Shingo International Conference, May 5-9, 2014 in Sandusky, Ohio. The awards gala is the conclusion to this five-day event featuring a selection of workshops, plant tours, keynote speakers and breakout sessions designed to provide ongoing knowledge, insights and experience for organizations in their pursuit of excellence.
